Flag

The national flag of Fiji was adopted on October 10, 1970. It is a light blue cloth with the Union Jack, which is the flag of the United Kingdom, in the canton and, on its left side, the actual coat of arms of the country (without the figures of the brackets, the burette, the crest, nor the national motto). The coat of arms is practically identical to the one used during the British colonial rule. The flag of Fiji is inspired by the Blue Ensign which is a dark blue flag incorporating the British flag in its upper right quadrant and used as emblem by numerous British government institutions, colonies and even four independent countries that chose to continue flying the same colonial flag after their respective independence, these countries being Australia, New Zealand, Tuvalu and Fiji included.

However, the most loaded symbol is the coat of arms. It combines colonial and Fijian characteristics. The St. George's Cross is the symbol of the flag of England.

In addition, the lion is a representative of the British monarchy. However, the banana bunch, the coconut tree and the sugar cane represent the republic. It has also been stated that the light blue is identified with the maritime waters of the country.
